Q&A with Gus & Victoria

What's your story of starting and running your business?

I (Gus) am originally from Brazil. After living in the USA for a while, my wife and kids moved to Brazil 10 years ago, where we stayed for 8 years. When we decided to come back to America, I started to research business ideas, as I did not want to be an employee anymore. That's when I ran into the junk removal business online. The main motivators were Matt and Jojo with Sonoma Strong Hauling. Then I found Andrew Thompson and other channels that share a lot of knowledge and ideas about the business.

It sounded fun, challenging and profitable. The relatively low start up cost was very enticing. It is a type of a business that is more about the individual and attitude rather than what equipment you can afford to start with.

Upon arriving back in the USA, we bought a 2001 Chevy truck, a 5' x 8' wood trailer and got to work within 45 days. Two months after starting the business we were able to buy a brand new 12' x 6' x 4' dump trailer. We still have the same setup today and are starting to look for upgrade options.

How do you make your junk removal service stand out in a competitive market?

Customer first. We try to accommodate our customer's needs as much as possible. Whether it is rescheduling an appointment or taking extra items (or less), we try to be as flexible as we can. The customer is paying a premium for our services and we try to make them feel very special. They need to feel that every dollar they spend is worth it.

As a business owner, how do you manage the balance between running a demanding business and your personal life?

We have been married for 21 years. Our first junk removal job was just a few days after our 20th anniversary last year. During all these years, we were in completely different fields professionally.

Now that we work together and have the same schedule, managing our parenting duties can be a challenge. Spending a lot of time together at work and then at home can be demanding at times, but we feel that since we started our business, we now have one more thing in common that we can talk about and look forward to. At the end of the day, it has helped our relationship grow.

How has social media impacted the growth of your junk removal business?

Social media is the main way we get jobs. We try to post jobs consistently. It can be tough, but nowadays is the only way to do it. Over the last few months, we have been focusing on getting more reviews. Mainly on our Google Business Profile. I believe that has helped us rank higher organically on Google searches

Can you share a successful social media campaign or strategy that helped increase your customer engagement or sales?

Facebook ads and Yelp ads have been our main drivers for leads. For those two, the reply to the first contact needs to be ASAP. The potential client may be just thinking about getting something done. If the reply takes too long, the opportunity may be lost. Google ads, although expensive, generate hotter leads. Our SEO is now starting to work and generating more quality, organic leads.

What challenges have you faced while implementing your social media strategy, and how did you overcome them?

The number one challenge has been posting content consistently. I believe showing that you are busy and the results of your work is important.

Number two is that we do not show our faces in our Social Media. That is something that we REALLY need to start doing to associate ourselves to the business. That is some of our short term goals and I believe it will be a game changer.

How do you measure the success of your social media efforts, and which metrics do you prioritize?

We are still building our social media presence, therefore our traffic is very limited and most of our leads are from ads. Every job we get we ask where the customer found us and track that in our CRM software.

Welcome to our latest newsletter! Today we're diving into the power of paid ads, specifically Google AdWords Search. Just like a well-coordinated team and reliable equipment are crucial for smooth operations, an effective advertising strategy is key to scaling your business efficiently.

When I first started my business, I was skeptical about online advertising. However, seeing the results firsthand changed my perspective entirely. Google AdWords has been a key strategy for us over the years, driving significant traffic and conversions. We invest roughly 95% of our six-figure annual ad spend in the Adwords platform.

The Power of Intent-Based Advertising: Google AdWords Search focuses on intent-based advertising, meaning your ads appear when potential customers are actively searching for your services. This approach is far more effective than distraction-based advertising, which hopes to catch the attention of people who may or may not be interested in your offerings.

High-Intent Traffic: The beauty of Google AdWords is that it brings in high-intent traffic. These are people already looking for what you offer, making them more likely to convert into customers. By targeting specific keywords related to your business, you can ensure your ads appear in front of the right audience at the right time, providing you the best opportunity to convert the lead into a paying customer.

Crafting Effective Ad Campaigns

Creating successful ad campaigns on Google AdWords requires a strategic approach. Here’s how to get started:

Keyword Research: Begin by identifying the keywords your potential customers are using. Tools like Google Keyword Planner can help you find high-traffic keywords relevant to your business. Focus on a mix of short-tail and long-tail keywords to cover a broad range of search queries.

Compelling Ad Copy: Your ad copy should be concise, compelling, and include a clear call to action. Highlight the unique selling points of your services and what sets you apart from competitors. Remember, you only have a few seconds to capture the viewer’s attention. 1, 2, 3... About as fast as you just read those numbers in your head is your window to grab someone's attention.

Landing Page Optimization: Ensure that your landing pages are optimized for conversions. This means having a clear, user-friendly design with relevant content that matches the ad. A seamless user experience can significantly increase your conversion rates. Specific landing pages should be built to complement specific ads that offer specific services. This blend of specificity will go a long way.

Measuring Success: Effective advertising is all about tracking and measuring performance. Google AdWords provides detailed analytics to help you understand how your ads are performing.Properly understanding these metrics will enable you to adjust your ads and campaigns for optimal performance.

Key Metrics to Monitor

  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): Indicates how many people clicked on your ad after seeing it.

  • Conversion Rate: Measures the percentage of clicks that resulted in a desired action, such as filling out a form or making a purchase.

  • Return on Ad Spend (ROAS): Evaluates the revenue generated from your ad spend, helping you understand the profitability of your campaigns.

Continuous Optimization: Regularly review your ad performance and make adjustments as needed. This could involve tweaking your ad copy, adjusting bids, or refining your keyword list. Continuous optimization ensures your campaigns remain effective and efficient.

In Closing

Google AdWords Search is a powerful tool that can drive high-intent traffic to your website, leading to increased conversions and business growth. By strategically crafting and optimizing your ad campaigns, you can maximize the return on your advertising investment. And keep in mind, just like building a skilled team, an effective advertising strategy requires ongoing effort and refinement.
