📪 HH #88: Your website

TL;DR – Your website still matters. Big time. It’s your online storefront—and if it’s slow, sloppy, or built cheap, it’s costing you jobs.

DIY and AI sites might look smart, but they rarely convert. They’re cookie-cutter, bad for SEO, and scream “I don’t take my business seriously.”

✅ A good website = a site that turns visitors into paying customers

✅ It loads fast, looks clean, and pushes people to call or fill out a form

✅ It’s built for humans and Google—and you own it, not your CRM or agency

And just because you build it doesn’t mean they’ll come. You need traffic. You need a plan. And your site has to convert that traffic into money.

Your website is a sales machine. If it’s not making money, it’s broken.

Let's talk about your website. You might wonder, with all the new tech and social media, is having a good website still important?

Short answer: YES!

Long answer: keep reading 👇

Your website is still one of the main ways people get to know your business. It’s the front door to your online presence. And if you’re paying for ads, your website is where people go next. If it’s not built right, you're losing money because prospects will bounce faster than you can say "clean-out".

What Makes a "Good" Website?

Easy answer—a website that turns visitors into customers.

How do you make that happen?

  • Smart Design: Your site needs to look good but also guide people to take action.

  • Clear "Calls to Action": Buttons and links that clearly show visitors what you want them to do next.

  • Helpful Words: Simple, clear text that gets people excited to call you or fill out a form.

  • Fast Loading: If your site takes too long to load, people will leave.

Your website doesn't need to win design awards. It just needs to work.

Should You Pay for a Custom Website?

Why spend money on a custom website when there are cheap DIY options or AI tools?

Here’s why: Better conversion rates.

AI tools are getting smarter, but we're not there yet. It still matters a whole lot who's using the AI tools and what they're putting in if you want something worthwhile to come out. Well-known marketer Allan Dib calls this "GIGO"—that stands for Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Right now, websites made by DIY platforms or AI look cheap. They don't represent your business well, and worse, they don't turn visitors into customers.

Think about it this way—saving money on a DIY website sounds smart. But if that website doesn't bring in business, you're actually losing money.

And do you really want to spend your nights and weekends learning web design?

You're in business to haul junk or provide a service, not mess with websites. Let a pro handle your website so you can focus on what you're good at, selling your wares.

Also, watch out for those DIY or cheap AI sites. Most use templates that hundreds of other businesses use too. Your site might look exactly like someone else's—even a direct competitor's.

One last tip: If you hire an agency, make sure YOU own your site. Don’t let an agency hold your website hostage. I've seen guys paying OUTRAGEOUS monthly fees for months (or even years!) before finally getting full ownership of their websites.

Is Having a Good Website Enough?

Short answer: No.

A website alone won’t bring customers to your business. You're invisible until you figure out how to drive traffic there. Think of it like a store on a busy street. How do they attract attention? Walk-ins, drive-by traffic, and local searches. But you're not a brick-and-mortar store—so how do you get attention online?

This ain't the Field of Dreams; just because you build it doesn't mean they'll come.

That plan can include:

  • Paid Ads: Google Ads, Meta Ads (I don't recommend), etc.

  • Local SEO: Helping local customers find you online.

  • Offline Marketing: Flyers, truck signs, networking—everything you do in the real world that sends people to your site.

Your website’s main job is to take all that traffic and turn it into paying customers.

A Quick Warning About CRM Website Builders

Be careful if your CRM software company (like Docket, etc.) offers to build or manage your website.

  • Their sites are usually generic and don’t convert well.

  • They’re often bad for SEO, meaning fewer people will find you on Google.

  • If you ever switch software, you'll lose your website completely.

Stick with a standalone site that you control. Trust my 11 years on this.

A Quick Note on SEO

I’m not diving deep into SEO today—that’s another yuge topic. But know this: SEO does matter. When your site is built, it needs to follow certain technical and user-experience rules that make it easier to find on Google.

If your site is built without these rules, it'll cost you big-time later when you're ready to tackle SEO seriously. You'll end up paying out the ass just to get consistent traffic flowing to your website. And remember—not all traffic converts. If you don't have excellent sales skills on the phone and a strong follow-up-and-through strategy, this can become an expensive game real fast.

Quick Recap

  • A good website turns visitors into customers.

  • DIY or cheap AI sites often cost you money instead of saving it.
