Is Starting a Junk Removal Business a Good Idea?

Writer's picture: Justin HubbardJustin Hubbard

If you’re thinking about getting into the junk removal business, you might wonder about its importance, longevity, and whether it's a solid business idea. Here’s my take: junk removal is a fantastic industry. It’s recession-proof, and it's not at risk of being replaced by technology. You don’t have to worry about robots or automated trucks taking over; people will always need someone to show up, go into homes, and remove items safely.

Why a Junk Removal Business Will Always Be Needed

We’re a society that produces more garbage every year. People are accumulating more stuff, especially now with remote work. Homes are evolving—they’re not just places to live anymore. They’re offices, gyms, daycare spaces, and more. All of that means more junk, more clutter, and more need for removal services.

Even in the worst economic times, people need junk removed. When they’re moving, downsizing, renovating, or just cleaning up, there’s always junk to get rid of. That’s what makes this business so stable: it doesn’t matter if times are tough or thriving—junk will always be around, and people will pay to get rid of it.

Going Green: Good for Business, But It’s Not a Differentiator Anymore

Eco-friendly disposal is huge now, and customers care about it. It’s a feel-good selling point and something every business should be doing. But, here’s the thing: everyone’s catching on to the “going green” angle. It’s not a huge differentiator anymore because it’s become the norm. That said, being responsible about disposal is important, and it gives customers another reason to feel good about hiring you.

Why Technology Won’t Replace Junk Removal—But It Can Give You an Edge

This industry is low-tech by nature, and that’s actually a good thing. Unlike a lot of other industries, junk removal can’t be automated away. But if you do use technology, it can put you miles ahead of your competition. When I started in 2014, we leveraged every online tool we could—Google My Business, directories, reviews—and it gave us a jumpstart. Now, with booking systems, customer communication tools, and automated follow-ups, you can make the process seamless for your customers.

Using tech to improve the customer experience—whether it’s easy online booking or fast follow-ups—can give you an edge without being high-cost. Even if you don’t adopt every new tool, you can still do well. But using technology where it counts? That can set you apart and give you an advantage.

Built on Local Relationships and Community Loyalty

Junk removal is a relationship business. It’s local, personal, and built on trust. You’ll be dealing with people in your community, and if you do the groundwork to establish those connections, they can sustain your business for years. I’ve found that if you’re reliable, easy to reach, and good at what you do, people remember you. They’ll recommend you, come back when they need more junk removed, and help spread the word.

Bottom Line: Junk removal has longevity, it’s hands-on, and it fills a real need that isn’t going away. It’s also unique because it’s low-tech yet benefits from smart use of technology, and it thrives on local relationships. If you’re looking for a business with stability and room to grow, junk removal has a lot to offer.✌️
