Does a Junk Removal Service Need a Team? When to Go Solo vs. Use Two People

The short answer is: it depends. Some jobs can absolutely be done by one person, while others require two or more. Let me break it down for you.
Starting Out: Solo Jobs Are Fine
If you’re just starting your junk removal business, working solo is perfectly acceptable. However, preparation is key. Always get a clear understanding of what the job entails before heading to the site. Ask for details, photos, or even videos from the customer to ensure you know exactly what you’re dealing with. This helps you avoid looking unprofessional or unprepared—like showing up and realizing you can’t haul certain items or need special equipment.
When I first started, I took on everything I could, including last-minute, late-night jobs. If I couldn’t get a partner, I would hop in my box truck and handle it myself. Occasionally, there’d be one or two items I couldn’t manage alone, and the customer was usually happy to lend a hand—especially because I was doing them a favor by taking on a last-minute job. In those situations, being solo worked out fine.
When Two (or More) People Are Necessary
On the other hand, scheduled jobs during regular hours are a different story. If you show up unprepared or unable to complete the job, it can frustrate the customer, damage your reputation, and even lead to a dreaded one-star review. Customers often hire junk removal services because they don’t want to deal with the hassle themselves. Failing to meet their expectations could disrupt their plans—like getting their house ready for sale or meeting a tight deadline—which might leave a bad taste in their mouth.
As your business grows, it’s wise to adopt a two-person crew as your standard. This not only ensures you’re prepared for any job but also gives your business a more professional appearance. With two people, you’re ready to handle same-day jobs, unexpected challenges, and heavy or awkward items safely. It’s better for your team, your truck, and your customers.
Professionalizing Your Service
As my business expanded, I moved away from one-person jobs almost entirely. While we still occasionally send out a solo operator for specific circumstances—like when we let the customer know upfront—we always strive for a two-person crew. It’s safer, more efficient, and presents a polished, professional image. Plus, it minimizes the risk of running into problems that could impact the customer experience.
Tips for Success with Solo Jobs
If you’re handling jobs solo, here are a few tips to ensure success:
1. Communicate Clearly: Get all the job details upfront and confirm whether special tools (e.g., dollies or hand trucks) are needed.
2. Plan Ahead: Review any photos or videos of the job to avoid surprises.
3. Set Expectations: If you can only send one person, let the customer know ahead of time to manage their expectations.
4. Stay Safe: Know your limits. Don’t attempt to move items that are too heavy or unsafe for one person.
The Bottom Line
You can absolutely run junk removal jobs solo, especially when starting out, but as your business grows, moving to a two-person team is the way to go. It’s safer, more efficient, and better for your brand’s reputation. Ultimately, whether you send one or two people depends on the job, the customer’s needs, and how you handle the situation. Preparation and clear communication are what truly dictate the outcome.✌️
