Building Your Business from Day One: Key Strategies for Starting a Business

What would you do differently if you had to start all over again?

I get this question a lot from new business owners eager to learn. My answer has always been simple—focus on what really grows the business and make that your top priority from the start.

When I first launched my junk removal business, I was working a full-time office job, with one box truck and a few friends who needed part-time work. I had to get creative, working with minimal capital and navigating digital marketing, which was still in its early days. I managed everything by day, often sneaking away from my desk to respond to voicemails or messages, sometimes even pretending to take bathroom breaks to follow up with leads. Every small opportunity mattered, and I knew that every effort counted.

In those early days, I wore all the hats—marketer, sales rep, and owner. And, looking back, I wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s exactly what I’d recommend to anyone starting out. Your primary job should be sales and marketing, understanding the psychology behind customer decisions. Get a team for the operational side—drivers and haulers—but keep your focus on what really builds the business: working on the business, not just in it.

Some say that you need to “work in” your business before you can “work on” it. But in my experience, the sooner you shift focus toward growing and strategizing, the better off you’ll be. Devote time to closing sales, attracting new customers, and working on your digital presence. You don’t need a massive budget to be effective—you need a clear plan and the commitment to follow through.

Imagine yourself in that one truck with three seats. You’re not driving; you’re making calls, updating listings, tweaking your website, and building your brand digitally. When possible, pay others to handle the physical tasks while you focus on expanding your reach. Network with real estate agents, property managers, and local businesses who can send clients your way. It’s the fastest way to grow from a one-truck operation to something that can scale.

Quick Tips for New Business Owners

1. Prioritize Sales and Marketing – Your focus should be on closing deals and connecting with new customers. The more leads you can turn into clients, the faster you’ll grow.

2. Delegate Early – Hire for operations so you can devote time to strategic growth. Your job is not just to work hard but to work smart.

3. Utilize Digital Tools – Manage your listings, keep up with reviews, and continually improve your online presence. Digital marketing is your friend, even on a small budget.

4. Network Locally – Introduce yourself to real estate agents, property managers, and local business owners. These relationships can bring in steady referrals over time.

Final Thoughts:

Starting a business isn’t about having everything figured out; it’s about putting one foot in front of the other and learning as you go. Don’t wait until everything feels “perfect” to start working on growth. Be bold, stay committed, and remember that every effort you put into building relationships and marketing your business will pay off in time.

Believe in yourself, invest in your growth, and never lose sight of the bigger picture. The journey might be challenging, but it’s worth every step. Keep moving forward!✌️
